Internet services interrupted across two continents

January 31st, 2008 by Erika Gault

Oops - looks like a ship’s anchor may have cut two cables used to carry internet signals across Africa, the Middle East and Asia. It is being reported that Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Bahrain Pakistan and India, are all experiencing severe problems.

Nations that have been spared the chaos include Israel — whose traffic uses a different route — and Lebanon and Iraq. Many Middle East governments also have backup satellite systems in case of cable failure. Officials say that this interruption may take up to two weeks to solve… well, at least we won’t be getting as many of those 419 emails I suppose :) However it may be a real problem for companies relying on all those outsourced call centers.
